In this fun workshop we will experience the city as an artist. Each student will be painting a variety of urban subject matter, buildings, trees, cars, and busy street scenes. The workshop will consist of a balanced mix of demonstrations and students creating and refining their own paintings. Anticipate completing three 11x15" paintings. Spencer will spend ample time with each student guiding and encouraging their efforts over the course of the weekend.

We will address one of the biggest obstacles for new plein air painters....the curious onlooker(s). They mean well, but sometimes they can create problems. You will not only learn to tolerate them, but eventually welcome these talkative visitors. They can be a huge source of encouragement. We will also learn how to politely "get rid of them" when they become too much a distraction.

Weather is a big factor in plein air painting. Spencer will have opportunity to teach students how to deal with the various problems encountered such as bugs, wind, changing sunlight, heat, rain. A plein air painter has to be prepared for any change in the elements.

Spencer will explain the foundational elements of both, watercolor and plein air painting. Initial focus will be on developing a solid composition from the chaotic scene in front of you. He will discuss simplifying complex scenes and you will learn tried and true techniques to get an accurate drawing on your watercolor paper. After discussing this topic students will then select subject matter of interest to them and begin the composition process.

With each painting session the instructor will show a variety of application techniques such as the various washes, glazing, wet-on-wet, dry brush, splattering and so much more. Discussion will take place on when to use each of these and when not to. Too much of a good thing can be bad....especially in watercolor.

Day one will teach basic fundamentals as listed below. Each student will probably complete one painting the first day. On day two students will be given more leash and less control by the instructor. Spencer will spend the bulk of this day helping students iron out issues that develop in their own paintings.Over the course of the workshop we will talk about quality of supplies and materials, i.e. paper, brushes, paint, palettes, easels, and any questions the students may have.

If you have been wanting to try watercolor and / or plein air, this is the class for you. Come join us for the fun!
