With Lisa Ober

Painting Portraits with Character

Saturday & Sunday, April 25 & 26, 2015

Have you always wanted to do a self portrait, a portrait of your mom or dad, or just want to know how to flatter a friend or client? Whether you're new to pastels, portraiture, or have years of creative experience, you will learn to see mature people in a new way and pick up new techniques as Lisa shares the invaluable tips and techniques she has mastered through decades of professional portrait painting. Every student will have the opportunity to complete a portrait with Lisa's personal guidance and encouragement.

Character lines? Gravity exerting a little pressure? Larger "freckles" on the face? Can't find the silver pastel color in your pastel box? The "freshman 20" is still there after 30 plus years? Are you hoping to create a flattering portrait that will honor these well-earned characteristics but not insult? It CAN be done! Learn to give your subject credit for the wisdom of living without focusing on the evidence of age.

Artist Lisa Ober, PSA, will be conducting a fun hands-on workshop sharing her approach to pastel painting of mature adults (50 and older). Lisa will guide students through step-by-step instruction using her portrait technique, from the first sketch to the finished portrait using a photo reference (provided). Short demonstrations followed by plenty of class work time make this class rewarding and enjoyable. Lisa will discuss achieving a likeness and proportion, color selection, pastel application, adding depth and expression—everything you need to bring your portrait to life in a flattering way. She will discuss how to enhance your subject's best features and demonstrate the techniques that minimize the appearance of age. There will be special instruction regarding the treatment of character lines (wrinkles), greying hair, and bringing out the eyes (the most critical component of a realistic portrait for any age). Lisa will also share additional tidbits of pastel wisdom as the students work through their respective portraits.

The workshop will be limited to 16 artists so everyone will receive plenty of personal guidance from Lisa. She will provide the U-art paper. You need to provide your own pastels, a ground cloth and easel. We have tables if you prefer to work flat. We will be working from a photograph, which we will provide. It's a two-day workshop, and includes snacks, and Diane's famous healthy lunches both days. Price for the workshop will be $425.

Bring your sense of humor and passion for pastel portraiture and be prepared to amaze yourself and others!
