Photographing Nightscapes and Starscapes is more than just taking pictures of the night sky. By including the landscape and foreground elements we begin to take dramatic story telling photographs. This is landscape photography under very challenging circumstances, and the sky becomes an essential element to make nightscapes work. Photographing nightscapes requires special skills, a lot of patience and attention to detail. This is a workshop for serious photographers who want to push their art to new levels, learn new skills and gain a new appreciation for the challenges of taking photographs at night.

This is a Saturday-Sunday two-day hands-on photography workshop where you will learn how to capture star trails and starry skies at night. It is a workshop for advanced amateurs and professional photographers.

Participants must have a DSLR camera and a tripod.  Use of a wide-angle lens, 28mm or wider (35mm/Full Frame equivalent) is highly recommended.  A lens with an aperture of f2.8 or faster is preferred for shooting Milky Way images.  To shoot star trails, a remote control timer will be required.  These are the 'must have' items, and once you sign up for the workshop, you will receive a complete supply list of optional items that will make your nightscape photography much easier and more enjoyable.
Participants will need to have a fundamental understanding of how their camera operates.  You should also have a basic understanding of Photoshop or Lightroom for post processing and prepping your final photographs, and you will need to download and install a free software application on your computer to create star trails.

Saturday afternoon, we will meet at Paint St. Louis Studios where Dan will present a PowerPoint program explaining how to take Nightscape and Starscape photographs. About 5:30 PM we will travel to a location outside of St Louis to set up and take photographs from about 1/2 hour before sunset until about midnight. Participants will learn how to shoot long exposures to capture starry skies and take multiple images that can be combined with software to create star trails.  They’ll also experiment with light painting to illuminate foreground elements that can add another dimension to their nightscape images.  The field trip will be a combination of guided practice and working individually with each photographer.

Sunday afternoon we will meet again at Paint St Louis Studios where participants will process images from the night before.  They will learn how to stack multiple images using StarStax software (free download for Mac or Windows) to create striking star trails.  They will have a chance to combine light-painted images with the night sky layers using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to create complete nightscape scenes. Participants may bring their own computers for hands-on work or watch a live demonstration on a large screen TV.
